Mike's bike on his first tour of Scotland. Summer 2015

The Model 1E

Designed especially for people new to cycle touring, who are perhaps unwilling to commit what is a large amount of money before they know they're going to enjoy their hobby. This bike is also popular with commuters who want a reliable year round workhorse.

We've kept the same frame as for the Model 1 and Model 2, but used a slightly more budget-conscious specification.  The best thing about buying an Oxford Bike Works bike is knowing that it fits you. (Bike shops buy stock and need to sell it, and some can be tempted to sell you something that isn't the right fit.) Just as with our higher models, you get a full fitting session in our studio, giving you the confidence to make your purchase.

To keep the price low we've had to limit the degree of customisation. We're happy for you to upgrade tyres, saddle or handlebar grips, but otherwise the specification is pretty much fixed. There are no racks or bottle cages, and the range of colours available may be limited - please call for the latest stock situation.

We use the same frame as for the Model 1 and 2, as we think, once you get into this amazing sport/activity/way of life you'll want to upgrade the components. It means you get the reassurance of knowing you have a high quality Reynolds 525 frame beneath you.

Our experience with 8 speed transmission on our Expedition model has shown us the reliability benefits of using a wider chain. Also we have found that 8 speed transmission needs less tuning and is less susceptible to cable stretch. We use a mixture of Shimano Claris, Alivio and Acera components, which we have found to be very reliable and smooth shifting

We didn't want to compromise on the quality of the wheels, so we have stuck with Shimano Deore hubs with 36 spokes. There'll be no need to upgrade these until you've done several long tours.
