Oxford Bike Works Model 1
The Model 1 is our classic flat-bar touring bike, with good quality components, designed to last the lifetime of the bike. Its available in both 26” and 700c wheel sizes.
Have you ever been into a bike shop and asked for a test ride on a touring bike? Many customers tell us that the reason for buying your touring bike from Oxford Bike Works is that you can see a wide range of touring options all in one place, you get an individual fitting session and an extensive test ride. The experience we’ve gained in sending people off around the world on our expedition bikes trickles down to our lower models, meaning we can offer the best advice and pass on our knowledge. Regular bike shops have to cater for all types of cycling disciplines and we think this is why you should buy from us.
The frame has Shimano Deore 30 speed gears fitted as standard, and these are reliable, effective components with a two year warranty.
We also only specify V-brakes, as we believe they are more reliable, require less maintenance and are just as effective in normal use, as disk brakes. Also, if you transport your bike by air, your disk brakes may need bleeding due to the pressure changes.
The wheels are perhaps the most important components after the frame - they need to be built to withstand the weight of the rider and luggage, and cope with whatever the surface throws at them. We specify Shimano Deore hubs, 36 plain gauge spokes and Ryde rims, as the best compromise between strength, weight and quality at this price-point.
Mudguards and a rear rack is also provided within the asking price, (unlike most of our competitors). A basic rear rack made by Axiom, rated for 70kg of luggage. Flinger black mudguards with Stainless steel stays come as standard.
Unlike cheaper bikes that look similar, made by volume manufacturers, our bikes contain no hidden cost cutting. The whole groupset is Shimano Deore - with high quality bottom brackets, headsets and hubs. The wheels are hand finished and retensioned, giving you the best quality wheels at this price-point. If you’re on a budget this bike can take you and your luggage round the world with little preparation.
We can also quote competitively for Ortlieb and Brooks panniers. Unlike online retailers we set up the panniers to fit correctly on our racks, saving you a fiddly job.

So, you've decided you're going to head off into the blue yonder but with all the equipment costs involved, you can't justify the full-on Expedition. We're now offering a slightly lower specced bike based on the Model 1 bu with crucial upgrades. It is designed to be more affordable, but still capable of withstanding the worst conditions you might face. We haven't compromised on the two key items - the frameset and wheels. The frameset is still our trusty Expedition frame set, (hand-built with Reynolds 525 tubing) and our wheels are still handbuilt.
A Cane Creek 40 series headset replaces the Chris King headset of the full-on Expedition, and standard 9 speed Shimano gear shifters replace the low-tech friction shifters. Schwalbe tyres are used, but we've gone for the well-proven Schwalbe Land Cruiser 26 x 1,75 tyre.
